Kuma Vida x Delana Muse
Creative Director, Sheila Salemme
What inspired the creation of your latest collection, and how does it reflect your brand's identity?
The inspiration behind our latest collection is rooted in the theme of fertility, exploring the concept of being fruitful in various aspects of life. This collection embodies earthy prints and bold colors, symbolizing growth and vibrancy. The cuts in the designs exude femininity, reflecting fertility as an intrinsic quality. This theme is a perfect reflection of Kuma Vida's identity, where simplicity meets extravagance. In this collection I wanted to speak to the subject of being fruitful even in the state of rest which speaks to the Kuma Vida woman and the way she carries herself in this world.
Can you describe your approach to sustainability and ethical practices in your manufacturing/design process?
At Kuma Vida, we adhere to slow fashion principles, ensuring that each collection is produced thoughtfully and ethically. Our latest collection is crafted entirely from eco-friendly materials, such as linens and lyocell, minimizing our environmental footprint. By producing in small batches and collaborating with like-minded studios around the world, we maintain a high standard of quality and ethical practices.
How do you stay ahead of fashion trends, and what do you see as the next big trend in the industry?
The Kuma Vida woman is not particularly interested in following fleeting trends. So instead, we focus on understanding how she wants to present herself and feel—chic, feminine, and relaxed. By prioritizing timeless elegance and personal expression over temporary fads, we ensure that our designs remain relevant and desirable. As for the next big trend in the industry, we believe there will be a continued shift towards sustainability and ethical fashion. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of their choices, and brands that prioritize eco-friendly practices and timeless designs will lead the way.
What challenges have you faced in building your brand, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I've faced as a designer is securing adequate capital to grow the business. This obstacle has taught me to be extremely resourceful and to prioritize effectively. It has pushed me to find innovative solutions and maximize the resources at my disposal, ultimately making me a better creative business owner. Leaning on my faith in God has been instrumental in maintaining a positive outlook and persevering through difficulties. These experiences have shaped Kuma Vida into a resilient and adaptable brand, capable of navigating the ever-changing landscape of the fashion industry.
How do you engage with your customer base and incorporate their feedback into your designs?
We place an emphasis on engaging with our customer base through social media, where we share updates, gather feedback, and build a community around our brand. Additionally, we conduct sample testing with a trusted community of taste makers when preparing to release a new collection. This allows us to gather valuable insights and ensure that our designs meet the needs and preferences of our customers. By fostering a close relationship with our audience and valuing their input, we create pieces that resonate deeply with the Kuma Vida woman, reflecting her chic, feminine, and relaxed style.
